The whole "Self-Serve Lobby" concept, while interesting... is probably a failed initiative that will frustrate more people than it will serve.
- I'm not paying for a electronic bag-tag that I can only use when flying by myself and with only one bag. (Even if they were free, my travel needs are such that I almost always check two bags.)
- That means that I have to print tags. Since I can no longer print at home, I have to print at the airport.
- There are few things worse than the kiosk lobbies with no lines and nobody knows where to go or what to do. (I'm picturing SAN, and the absolute mob of directionless people during the busiest times. Granted, SMF is a little bit nicer on that front, so maybe with a new T1 at SAN, the checkin lobby can be improved.)
- Unless you restrict the self-serve bag scale and intake machines to frequent fliers, they will be clogged up by people who can't figure out the technology or what they're supposed to do.
- Consequently, I'm bypassing that foolishness to go straight to the priority check-in line and working with an agent who will print tags, tag bags, print a bp, take my bag, and wish me happy travels.
(And before someone says "OK Boomer" - I have one foot in GenX and the other in the Millennial generation... I'm typically a technology early adopter... but if I have more than 3 or 4 items, I'm not using self-checkout at the local Grocery/Target/Lowe's either.)
