I've had reasonable luck with "upgrades" as they are with Hampton Inns over the last decade, but a lot of my stays are in smaller towns where perhaps nightly elite count is not high. Perks have varied from Union City, TN where they personalized the HHonors parking spot with my name as a reserved spot and in addition to the typical water/snack benefit allow you to grab a couple beers from a cooler, to one I've frequented in Richmond, VA near the airport where the upgrade is as others have experienced - a room about 30% larger with a separated seating area with a couch and coffee table, and a second TV (which baffles me as it's about 20 feet down the wall from the other TV and you can see both from the bed and the couch). Vickburg, MS has been good to me the couple times I've stayed... upgrade was truly to what would be a one bedroom suite with the stocked fridge/snack basket included, plus the standard two waters/snack from check-in and a free beer at 5pm.
Most of my hotel stays are fine for a Hampton Inn, upgraded or not, as all I'm doing in the room is working and sleeping. I'm just glad for two bottles of water and a yogurt/muffin to go in the morning and I'm set. But I do wonder with upgrades now "official" if there will be some sort of consistency, though the vintage of many HI properties does not have them as cookie cutter as most HGI in floorplan.
