Resurrect this thread because one of the argument used by the OP was about ketchup should be free when you ordered chips… I mentioned about it wasn’t the case in many European places since many years ago. OP and a couple others claimed that wasn’t the case.

Well, just returned home from a long trip that including an overnight stay at Trastevere, Rome that we had to use a nearby McD for both the dinner and the breakfast the next morning. Ketchup (and other condiments) is o.25 euro per packet. I immediately thought about this thread. LOL.

And, while you can pay for your purchase at the ordering kiosk, there are still customers pay at the counter. I actually think that is a good thing - the Italian society does not force people to go for a cashless society which the OP is very fond of, but may not be beneficial to everyone, especially no so for both the youngsters and the elderliesfor obvious reasons.

OTOH I do like the contactless payment system which resolves the issue of US CC has no PIN, therefore precludes it’s usage in unmanned gas stations, train ticket vending machines, grocery stores self serve payment line, etc. The contactless payment method London public transportation uses is a brilliant solution. So convenient yet you don’t lose any benefit the old Oyster Card offers (the daily cap).
