I've been lucky with AA before, with a late arriving QF international flight and a domestic AA flight booked on another ticket. I was fully prepared to hand over my credit card and pay whatever excessive fare and fee they quoted me, but the AA agent happily moved me for free. I then embarrassed myself trying to offer a tip as a thankyou but was refused.
