Many thanks for the review, Nagasaki Joe! We're slated to stay at their sister resort, Amane Resort Gahama next February. We're going to bring along Mrs. KI-NRT's mother as well as her two nieces and their families, as a treat to them as part of our anniversary celebration. I don't know that Beppu has a ryokan or resort that's on the same level as the top properties in Yufuin or Kurokawa Onsen, but I'm hoping that Amane will fit the bill for a multi generation get-together (with children in tow.) Will report back after our stay.
In terms of a traditional Japanese-style luxury onsen ryokan, Beppu may not measure up to Yufuin or Kurokawa Onsen, but if you're OK with Japanese-modern style, the ANA IC has excellent onsen facilities, not to mention a pool, fitness center, club lounge, and incredible panoramic views of Beppu and the bay. I hope you have a great time at Gahama Terrace (the photos on Tripadvisor look very nice), I look forward to reading your report on your stay.
