The positive was that we saw a member of cabin crew that served us a few months before and recognised us and had a good chat with me as we boarded the transit. He said straight away “why didn’t you go through T5B connections”.

You can't go through T5B or T5C connections if connecting to a domestic flight or to DUB/JER. There are no immigration facilities in B or C, and they haven't go the the required biometric capture equipment which is required.
