The OP hasn’t made it clear if they are booking 2 separate tickets or 1 through ticket. If the former, then any delay to the LHR - LAX leg will have a large impact on the LAX - PPT sector without protection. If it is a through ticket from LHR to PPT, then the OP is indeed covered by EC261.
