i now see where i was mistaken. Aeroplan has a document called "Flight Rewards Policy." On the last page is a chart titled "Change and cancellation fees." It shows changes as being per ticket, per direction. I now also see that the cancellation/refund section only says "per ticket." My mistake. thanks for your comment.

Are you using the webpage or the AC/Aeroplan app? I had a similar thing happen to me where the two one ways on the webpage were correct but the round trip was higher than it should have been. The app had the correct round trip points redemption.
I was on the webpage so I had a look at the app and the total is correct. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll book one ticket on the app.
