It's not about cost at this point. It's far more important than that!
Rental clubs can be an interesting experience. BA lost my clubs on a 2016 trip to Scotland when I had an early round scheduled at North Berwick West.
I wasn't about to pass on a round there so rented a set at the starter's shack. For the first three holes, all my iron shots were going left, left, left.
I was puzzled but eventually realised that the irons were set a couple of degrees closed. I slightly opened the clubfaces for the rest of the round, and everything was fine. BA delivered my clubs to my hotel in Edinburgh the following day.
Back to the OP, I'd check the availability of rental clubs at each course or even better, the possibility of renting clubs for several rounds so that you aren't playing with a strange set each round. Buy a dozen good but not crazy expensive balls--you're likely to lose more balls than usual with an unfamiliar set of clubs--a golf glove, a pair of shoes that are suitable for both the course and off-course activities, and a set or two of clothes. Keep all your receipts.
And in the future, consider packing a small bag with one change of clothes, your toiletries, 6-12 golf balls, some tees and a glove, and a pair of golf shoes to carry on with you. All airlines and airports have shown an increasing tendency to lose bags. You cannot carry your clubs onboard, but you can be prepared otherwise so you don't have to spend valuable golf time in a department store!
