In regards of curtain move, there is no rule. Can happen anytime, sometimes even after on line checkin open all the way to actual boarding. Usually theoretical seating takes over the flight around T-72 hours, that is your best bet to see what is the situation about row 8. If still the same I would re-check it around T-30 hours as usually few hours before online checkin open you might not able to change/select seats and you just get a message you have to wait for OLCI. Worst case you select that time. Seat alert can be useful too also people can cancel their trip so anything is possible.

To clarify, it's Expertflyer that's showing row 8 as blocked (ie X's), not BA's own seatmap. BA's just showing it as unavailable. I don't know why they differ.

Ditto, it's from Expertflyer that I can see the front three rows of economy are currently X'd in case of a potential curtain move.

I've set an alert on Expertflyer now and I'm sure things will shift over the next week. I could have done with it being a bit more easy to manage, due to dealing with family illness/stress, but quite honestly if I'd been that bothered I'd have paid the £25 a seat (or whatever it is now) to have booked them prior to when I was allowed to do it for free. I'm not used to being Bronze (and I'll probably be Blue next membership year so then I'll really have to suck it up).

I've got two redemption CW/First longhauls coming up after this and will again probably be a bit shocked to have lost my Silver privileges, but it's just not physically possible to add in a tier point run or double point holiday to get my status back.
