22 lbs is a lot of clothes. Are you sure you need to check a bag? We (a family of four) do 10 day trips like this a couple of times of year and have only checked a bag once in the last 10 years (Turkish rug).

$238 is steep I had no idea it's gotten that bad.
I would be looking for other options too.
