In any case, CX will through-check bags onto a separate ticket on SQ (obviously provided that the scheduled transit in HKG is within 24 hours). See https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...in-policy.html

Indeed, HK does not require that the transfer be on a single PNR and CX will through-check your bags even on separate tickets.

But I don't know if the reverse is true is you fly MLE-HKG on SQ.
