Several have mentioned the Roku is a bit remote; I see the properties are only 5 miles apart, can’t we cab it to the tourist areas?

Have you been to Kyoto before? If not, there are just so many things you would want to do that becomes overly time consuming due to the location. Of course you can cab it around, but it is pricey and Kyoto traffic is sometimes surprisingly sluggish.
If you want to stick with Hilton, I'd say 5 nights at the HGI and 2, at Roku. HGI calls themselves Shijo-Karasuma, but the are probably closer to being Gojo-Karasuma. So between 5th and 4th main street crossing the city, in the centre of town. Meaning you can walk to the central restaurant and shopping area, and walk to Gion in 25 minutes. You are less than 5 minutes away from the subway, and plenty of busses to the rest of town.
