You run into that risk when you willingly book separate tickets. Airlines enter a contract of carriage for transport between points A and B in the ticketed class of service period. Granted United was waffling for a little bit on ensuring that you are ticketed in First Class on the respective legs but they are not responsible for your culpability in booking separate tickets across separate airlines.
That may be true for a few hours delay, but 24+ hours is on the airline. “Why did you plan to attend a wedding 24 hours after arriving? You shouldn’t make plans that an airline will arrive within +/- 24 hrs of the booked ticket time”. See how ridiculous that sounds?
Why should I buy a paid F ticket, if they do not guarantee me arrival within +/- 1 day? Like most F travelers, I have commitments - business, family - that cannot be readily shifted by 24 hrs to help an airline fix their own screwup. That’s the point of paying for F, among other things.
Also - UA originally downgraded me to J on the TATL portion and thought I wouldn’t notice. I had to check the reservation and spend 2-3 hrs on the phone fixing.
