AA backed off on the policy and reinstated the old rules circa mid-July. This is due to not being able to track the eVIPs electronically, due to "software problems". So the current system is actually the best of both worlds, earn them as soon as you (re)qualify for EXP, but valid until Feb of the following year (potentially 25+ months, if you qualify early enough!).
