Seat Allocation for Hand Luggage Only

So I'm booking seats for the kids, four of them together on one PNR, and I don't want to pay £400 extra for them to have a checked bag each when they don't need it (the wife and I are in WT+ so we have four checked bags between us already). And I get to the point where you can pay to choose seats and click on the link that says "What happens if you don't choose seats now?", and it says:

On hand baggage only fares, a seat will be allocated
On hand baggage only fares, if you don't pay to choose your seats in advance, we will allocate you a seat at check-in, from 24 hours before departure. You will be able to pay to change your allocated seat during check-in, but the selection will be limited.
Now, does that mean that they will be allocated seats together? Or will they just be stuck individually all over the cabin?
