With mileage credit now based on a multiplier of fare paid, it is amazing sometimes how little mileage credit you get for a long flight.
Looking at my flying history from this year alone, I have had at least six flights with base miles earnings between 300-350 for flight distances of more than 2,000 - e.g. EWR to SFO (345), SFO to IAD (305).
UA miles are no longer useful for me anymore, but YMMV.
