I've often wondered about this - there must be plane-specific mechanics at all the airports to perform repairs. So, even if not an AS mechanic at least someone qualified to get the plane back in the air? The alternative would be getting a mechanic on a plane to the site of the "broken" plane which sounds expensive and time consuming.
