Sounds like you booked a Basic Economy ticket and there are multiple warnings of this unless you entered from Google Flights
If this is an all UA itin, UA offers a $99 option for domestic BE / $199 option for international BE to convert the ticket to a changeable ticket
We also offer the option to add United Economy benefits to a Basic Economy ticket for a service charge. This allows you to cancel or make changes to your flight without paying a change fee, and also entitles you to other benefits included with United Economy fares
