As far as I know following the signs to flight connections takes you to the usual flight connections centre in T5 so no passport control if going international but you’d need a passport check (to enter the UK) if flying domestic or CTA.
There is a separate and very clearly signed UK + Ireland Flight Connection centre, as there is in T2. There are effectively 6 ways to connect at T5, and you have at least 2 to choose from.
1) Go landside via the UK Border and re-enter (especially if able to use the First Wing and you have over an hour spare)
2) Go landside via UK Domestic - no passports
3) UK Domestic Flight Connections (does not include DUB or JER arrivals)
4) Flight Connections International - no passports
5) Flight Connections UK + Ireland - passports
6) Dublin and JER, which have their own landside route via Customs but not Passports, so is a hybrid of 1 and 2.
