You're looking for C inventory, which is the same fare class you would need for SWU or miles+copay upgrades. Finding 2 seats is not impossible but you will need to be flexible. I just found 2 on a Tuesday night on the last JFK-SFO flight of the evening in mid December. I have found Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays to be the easiest Availability is constantly changing so keep an eye out or set up alerts with expertflyer. Good luck!
