You run into that risk when you willingly book separate tickets. Airlines enter a contract of carriage for transport between points A and B in the ticketed class of service period. Granted United was waffling for a little bit on ensuring that you are ticketed in First Class on the respective legs but they are not responsible for your culpability in booking separate tickets across separate airlines.
