Flying again to Haneda next wee from LAX. Surprisingly my return 20 days out cleared for F upgrade. The outbound from LAX has not cleared - still waitlisted. Waitlisted to Haneda on NH 105 with 3 seats taken. NH 5 to Narita 12 hours earlier has 2 seats taken. I called and asked if I could be on both wait lists - they do not allow this. (on Cathay I was able to waitlist more than one flight)
My fare permits changes and fare seems to be the same.
The agent did volunteer that as of now I am the only wait list for 105 and there are none for 5 - I did not switch to 5, since if I fly on business I rather have the room that flight uses.
If upgraded does not clear, other than trying day of flight for NH 5 (I leave close enough to LAX that the ride may be worth it), any known strategy of increase odds for the upgrade? I have the points in the account and I am still only Platinum.

Cathay is slowly returning more and more flights (final destination is Manila), It is so much easier to reach them and manage upgrades with them
