Generally the United forum is a better place to ask about using United miles. Generally, you can book United awards for flights on ANA.
If you buy a ticket for cash, you can use United Plus Points for upgrades, or you can use your miles to upgrade via the Star Alliance upgrade flow. United Plus Points requires rather expensive booking class to be possible. Star Alliance uogrades also requires rather expensive booking classes, plus they require award booking class to be available. So neither option is as attractive as it may sound.
