I had a funny situation a few years ago with QR where I used the cash upgrade offer before my two outbound flights to pop up to business - my first leg from the UK to Doha got the normal economy tier points and avios but funnily enough the next leg got me full business class tier points and avios - kept quiet about that as it may have been a fluke but was a comfy way to unexpectedly qualify for Silver that year.
