Finished a stay at the Sofitel, and it was much better than I expected tbh.
The Good:
First, the hardware is both new and aesthetically pleasing. I had 2 expiring suite certificates so I applied them to the stay, and the suite is designed in a way that I’m partial to, but ymmv as this is subjective. They also use the better Nespresso Creatista machines. The price for suites are also quite reasonable, compared to the entry level room, and I’d probably opt for it every time, if I were to return again.
Service at breakfast was excellent, but otherwise don’t expect too much personalization. Locals also seem to enjoy handing out and taking pictures for the gram at the lobby level, with all those sofas and teddy bears.
Club lounge offerings are actually quite good, and I was pleasantly surprised. The presentation was nice and they were all of a good quality (I did not try the sushi, because buffet style nigiri is always a disappointment).
I liked the location, as it was near Maxwell Food Centre (must try the Lao Ban Beancurd dessert. Tian Tian is a skip, Boon Tong Kee is better in every way).
The Bad:
The service won’t be anything like Kempinski or Raffles, so not true luxury, but I also think things might’ve improved significantly since the pandemic (although I have no first hand knowledge and are going by the reviews here).
The suite had some serious style over substance design issues. For example, the single power outlet near the master sink area is for shavers only. If you or your travel companion want to blow dry your hair, you’re gonna have a pretty bad time. The mirror area’s illumination also has much to be desired, making it quite difficult to do anything like styling your hair or putting on make up.
Would I return? Maybe, if I happen to want to be in the CBD and need the space, it’s a pretty decent offering (though not necessarily luxury).
I uploaded some pictures of the suite and the happy hour spread.
