Trip credit or flight credit can't be used to book tickets for someone else?

Can anyone please explain what facts below are true and what aren't? I'm told by family friends that they're stuck with the following situation:

They booked tickets on AA in probably 2021 on a domestic itinerary, cancelled the tickets and have some type of something that they can use to book tickets for themselves, but they have to book (and maybe use) the tickets by the end of 2022. They can't use the "something" to book tickets for someone else, such as a relative. And they can't book a new ticket with the "something" and then cancel the new ticket and thus extend the period to use the "something" that way. And the original tickets were nonrefundable, and they can't pay extra to book a refundable ticket and get a refund that way. So they're stuck with a "something" that's going to expire in 2022 (and can't even be used to book a ticket that would be used after 2022), causing them to lose the value.

Is this a flight credit or a trip credit? And is it true that whatever they have can't be used to book tickets in someone else's name (even a child's)? And the ticket that is bought with it has to be used in 2022?

Whatever they have, is there any kind of way to extend the period in which it can be used, and is there any way to make it refundable or usable to book a ticket for someone else? I suspect that they're being told partial nonsense by a regular AA agent.

Thanks.
