Terrible visit at Athenee Bangkok

Had the misfortune of staying at this hotel one night last week on an overnight from SGN to LHR (with a stopover in BKK). This is easily the worst luxury collection / St. Regis / Ritz etc. I have ever stayed in. I will not be back. I am a lifetime platinum, and current Titanium member with Bonvoy. It didn't make a difference.

Checked in at 2pm and needed to wait until 3pm for an available room. Beyond frustrating, since I was in Bangkok for about 12 hours and wanted to explore the city. Told I was "upgraded" to a King Room, which is the room type I booked. My chances are typically better in Asia for an actual upgrade, but no luck. My streak of 5-6 years without a meaningful upgrade from Marriott continues. Room was fine, but also absent from the better hotels was a welcome card / gift / chocolate / fruit / wine. None of that arrived. No turn down service either.

The most frustrating aspect for me was the hotel arranged transportation back to the airport when I was leaving the next morning was 45 minutes late. I needed to cancel at meeting that I hoped to take from the airport.

On the positive, the lounge was nicely furnished, with great views of the city (26th floor I believe). Food was so-so - mostly Chinese. Hoped for more of a Thai influence. Staff in the lounge were extremely friendly and accommodating.

To be fair, in the hotels defense, they were hosting the APEC conference at the hotel, and the delegation (Prime Minister, Deputy Minister, Army Generals etc.) from Vietnam were using this hotel. I received notice that security will be tighter (fine), but once the hotel-arranged car transport was already 20 minutes late, I was physically not allowed to exit the hotel to look for a taxi on the street, since some high ranking official was arriving.

This is not acceptable. If you want to host events like this, then do not accept reservations from non-Apec customers. But even with Apec and car issues aside, I will never stay in this property again.
