Fine, I'll let you believe these urban legends I'll take the suite though, just coz it shows as available on the website and I insist that I want it. Maybe the OP finds this approach useful, too.

That doesn't happen regularly, why? Maybe once a year or even two, when suites are available and the hotel just says "no" coz they don't want to upgrade.
Now, of course it happens that I don't get a suite - but I want to stress that there is always another reason for that, and it's my own decision to forgo the suite. For ex., if I am having a short overnight stay and don't care about a suite. Or when a nice premium room with balcony is actually better than a suite. Or in budget hotels when a suite is usually just made up of 2 connecting rooms, meh.
