If I buy a Y ticket on AS to or from Hawaii over UA, AA, or WN - and possibly pay a higher fare than those carriers offer - you can be sure that AS's published upgrade policies have played a significant part in my decision. It's only right that AS apply those policies as written. Indeed, this is a point that AS management would no doubt agree with; the problem here is that AS's systems aren't tight enough to prevent its employees from breaking the rules to their personal benefit. That's called corruption, and it's a sad comment indeed that some people see no problem with it.

Shenanigans used to be a big problem on UA, but management cracked down it, making it clear that suspicious upgrades would be investigated and violators terminated. That pretty much solved the problem. AS should do same.
