As of right now, there is availability in the fare class we booked to fly Saturday 11/19 instead via LAX on UA839. Upgrade list became visible earlier this evening and shows 9/48 available in J, zero available in PY. If we switched into this flight we would rank #7 and #8. Make the change with one day delay for the chance of the upgrade? or take the loss and suck it out in economy on the direct flight?
You don't explain what "very close to zero chance" on IAH-SYD means but LAX-SYD being #7 and 8 for 9 seats (currently) is the next best thing to "next to zero chance". I wouldn't delay an entire trip like that just to hope for an upgrade that's highly unlikely to come. There will be plenty of buyups on LAX-SYD taking those seats IMO. And LAX doesn't have bad enough weather to cause a lot of misconnects so they'd have to be outstation or other hub flights forcing them. Just not seeing it. If you were #3 and 4 I'd say it's worth a shot.
