Why would anyone take it up though without the (albeit also pointless) incentive? A free checked bag is only beneficial if you want to (a) pack liquids and/or (b) not drag your bag through the airport. By the time you’re at the gate, neither of those apply, so there’s no advantage to gate checking vs keeping the bag with you.
Would there be the unintended consequence of people deliberately not buying luggage allowances or even purchasing HBO fares knowing that they can be relieved of them at the gate and secure priority boarding?
As I mentioned on a previous thread about cabin bags, people connecting from long haul have a different perception of what is a cabin bag compared to those simply doing a there-and-back trip?
I have seen some horrendous cabin bag mules complaining because their ballooning cabin bag fitted in a 777 locker and not in the 319 locker.
