No way this is for real, right? I've never heard of needing to be at the gate 90 min prior to departure.

Well , for some destinations it is possible for many reasons , and sometimes it is an airline policy , while other carriers in same airport flying same route might have other procedures
check on TAP website for deadlines per airports but it is possible this is a true information you saw , so do not take risks and be on time
To give you an idea , i had a case when check-in closed 3h before take off and then at the gate 1h30 mins before take off
