Does the later flight have 2 seats available for sale in J? If so call up Avios and ask if they can request for RJ to open a second award seat for you. (In recent months I've had this happen twice. JL happily opened award space in F, QR did not!).

If there are no seats, then not many options than to look for another day, or take the downgrade.
