Always perplexed why, if the passport fails at the e-gate, other than for mechanical reasons, what additional human intervention by the immigration person at the desk adds, when the e-gates have the benefit of AI, biometrics etc.
Really, if it’s a case of someone having the same name as a persona-non-gratia, how does sending them to a human improve the chances of confirming “that is not the droid you’re looking for” (with apologies to George Lucas)? Surely the AI and biometrics would know the name doesn’t match the wanted person’s biometrics? I still remember the old days when, at the UK border, the tweed-jacketed immigration officer would look up your name in his alphabet-indexed book of wanted persons and, upon not finding a match, would stamp you into the country. Are e-gates just a modern equivalent of that book? Surely AI and automation have advanced beyond that?
