Those fees in the TPG article were an IT glitch and showed up at almost every hotel when booking through the app and not the website. That problem has been resolved. The folio issue here is definitely the payment from Bonvoy and was a mistake billing, as is obvious by the quick reversal of the charge in OP's case.
Fair enough but will see what else Marriott has in store for its customers.

The new free Bonvoyed Platinum status available to anyone with a pulse & no stays taking an American Express credit card may likely be far worse than Fees or accidental fees.I’m here at the great Sheraton Grand in Sydney and last night the lounge was so packed I stood standing up at 6 PM in the evening.
Now add pile on another 20 million newly minted Platinums 😳🙄 or however many and Houston we have a problem
The only thing I see is more devaluation in benefits and award cost going to redeem
Hopefully I’m proven wrong but I’ve observed and participated for 28 plus years of loyalty programs to date and it looks bad IMO
