Jumping in here with a couple of questions.
Arriving around 7:30am with hand baggage, and my next flight isn't until 8:55pm.
Is there anywhere I can store my bag whilst I head into the city? It's a backpack but it's getting heavier, so I don't want to carry it for 10hrs, and dont want to check it as it has things in it i need (and dont want to wait for it in MAN).

If you can cope for a relatively short period, then there are plenty of cheap storage places in Manhattan (other boroughs exist), close to the C/E Subway lines back to JFK. Last time I was there I left my case at a tourist trinket shop around 39th Street/8th Ave for $5 via one of the online booking services. They also offered 30% off anything in the shop in return, which I didn't need a massive amount of willpower to resist.
That's probably quicker overall than schlepping around the terminals twice, particularly as some now require a bus transfer from the Airtrain.
