I always email hotels to ask for quiet rooms and many managers are impressed by the amount of nights as a leisure traveller. I think that is why I am pretty well treated, but would be nice to get a few guaranteed perks for my loyalty.
That's the thing though. As a leisure traveller you can take the time to email managers in advance. I know people who that for Hyatt, to try to avoid using a suite upgrade award.
But if someone is travelling for business I'm sure they would just want a quiet room for resting. And if they stay 200 nights a year in hotels, I'm pretty sure they don't want to be emailing every hotel in advance.

(on that topic of "upgrades upon availability"-had an argument with the Marriott customer service on what it means. She said it means you have to ask for it. If you don't ask they shouldn't give you. Her explanation was some people don't want upgrades. Really?)
