Yeah, I did over-generalise. I was eyeing a special route (HEL-LHR-HEL) and there I was struck by seeing a lot of U and 7 days before there was a big change in U on multiple departures, despite no change in what was offered in revenue classes at that time.
For example CPH-HEL there are U availability closer to departure. So I didn't give enough details in my post!

Classic happened: ug waitlist didn’t clear out at T-40 (not T-37), contacted CS Plat Whatsapp and asked if I could still wait in the list until the departure and they were like ”oh there seems to be J seats available, so I can upgrade you right away”. Not optimal säätö but at least I got my J seat. Just a bit weird.
Another example on how broken the process is. Of course this opens opportunities for the savvy member - just keep on asking CS about failed upgrades all the way until take-off and it might clear even if it has been denied. Hopefully even Finnair realises that this wacky waitlist process isn't a sustainable solution.
