although I retired from an active-duty position, I spent the bulk of my career as a Reserve officer in Acquisition career fields, and never deployed to an operational area … I was also in 1F, boarding immediately after the active-duty folks, so I’m *NOT* mentioning this on my own behalf
The announcement allowing active duty personnel came about as a result of the US involvement in numerous actions around the world as a way to show appreciation for our men and women in uniform even to the point of giving up our "seats up front" for them as well. A great feeling to show a young service member something special. Veteran has been added by many GA's in the past few years. There are many of us Vietnam combat vets are so not use to being "thanked" even embarrassed preferring to let current members of the armed forces take the limelight.
