Long story short = beware of aircraft and seat swapping , so no schedule or paid options will 100% save you from dissapointment , regardless of airline

Check reports and what types of aircrafts are usually assigned on the routes you will fly .... Such websites like flightradar24 or flight-report with reports about TAP or TAP express can help (TAP express is/was for TAP what United Express is/was for United , i mentionned both due to your flights to BIO and BCN)

For sure IAD-LIS wont be with a b737 , but rather an a321xlr with newer cabins (or an a330x maybe) but TAP doesnt have 3248392 types of long haul aircrafts , so investigation will be easier

However for short/mid-haul flights , you need to take into account the fact that swappings are most likely to happen , but it most probably will be an ATR or Embraer

You can get the seat you want in economy , regardless of the fares , after you just need to pay (if not included) and be sure its not taken already

If thats your main concern , go straight for an extra legroom seat (its called comfort seat) , in order to get one you either select the plus fares or you book it as a paid option. These seats are emergency seats or the first few economy rows in front of plane

To know how much it will cost feel free to run simulations from TAP website

For flights to and from BCN or BIO its kind of useless cause it will be super short
