Thank you, I was unaware of the required notice, that is very helpful. Under that condition I can book backup award flights but cancel them if unneeded before our trip begins.

There's also the Caledonian Sleeper train to London... Sadly *extremely* unreliable even when there are no strikes.
Intend to book LNER. I did the sleeper northbound once when much younger, it was a cheap ticket branded "Nightrider" which may date me, and it was just as chaotic back then.

Clearly yes, but I would prefer not to have to drop £700 for the two of us on a one-hour nonstop, hence preference for alternatives, Avios booking being most sensible I think.

Why? Hire car prices / availability, tailbacks, etc.? As noted upthread I do not think Mrs. B will tolerate an all-day coach trip but I can drive Edinburgh --> LHR in about six hours.
