That's fair it's certainly possible that the ticket is merely out of sync. However, in that case, it's normal for it to print a message about the reservation needing to be resynced. But, with United IT, I agree that it's worth a shot.
I've pretty consistently just gotten the "waitlisted" notation without a resync message when I've had a minor schedule change affecting an LH or LX segment. It generally clears up by itself after a few weeks.
Unfortunately, I kind of doubt that's the explanation here.
