If I have an advantage award and I want to make a date change, does there have to be equivalent online availability for the new date, or do I end up in a waitlist situation?

I ask because I was surprised recently with a situation where I had a ticket on LH. There wasn't availability online to make a date change but because I had an existing ticket, there apparently are "special allowances" by calling up.
