Then, Marriott tempted me to try them, and they gave wonderful service and upgrades. But that was 35 years ago when the program started (Black Card). Then, about 20 years ago, I noticed that I was no longer getting as many upgrades. So I changed to SPG and was MUCH happier. Then, as we all know, it went back to Marriott. So I started staying at Omni Hotels (I happen to have one in my "frequently visited" range so I get great upgrades here, and in Doha, and elsewhere (limited footprint).) Marriott hasn't been very good for US upgrades in the last 20 years.
