For comparison, without any further information, on a pure spend level, that number isn't too much out of line with AA depending where you're starting from.

AA if you're starting from nothing appears to take around 27000 in spend to reach EP, whereas if you're starting from EP takes approximately 18,000. Depending how UA implements the 24k requirement could very well be in line with what AA has for their top tier status.
There are more ways to earn LPs on AA.

I have no horses in the race, as I am an economy fare free agent. That said, if going to $24K is what it takes for people to step off the rat race to the bottom, and in turn, UA gets the cold water it needs, then bring it on!
