A slightly oversized bagpack will most likely not be an issue. The gate agents are looking for suitcases, trolleys, large duffle bags etc. that clearly doesn't fit under the front seat.

Once onboard you just put it in the overhead bin; nobody cares/the crew doesn't enforce that you need to put the bag under the seat in front of you.

So no need to purchase any "extras".
