The ESTA is valid for 2 years* and for multiple visits to the US. I personally wouldn't be concerned about using it for the trip you have planned. (My most recent trip had me pass through the US 3 times... ..no problems at all) EDIT: According to the CBP website it appears that you CAN in fact amend certain details on your ESTA anyway... destination is one of those details that apparently can be changed...you could change it to "transit'?
*If your passport gets replaced during that 2 year period you DO need a new ESTA.
