Do you actually cancel? It's auto canceled anyway when you don't board. I don't believe it's helpful to the airline to cancel, except that they know you're not flying a few minutes earlier, for whatever difference that makes.

I don't make a habit of dropping legs (it's just not something that comes up even once a year... maybe once every other, on average -- not because I go in planning to drop a leg but rather because something comes up last minute or even mid-trip prompting me to change my destination). But, yes, I always cancel when I do. I don't expect AA to come hunt me down for dropping legs, but at least by canceling the reservation affirmatively I am playing within the parameters set up by AA.
