The problem with all this is that if you actually wait until you get to CLT and then cancel the last leg, whether online or by calling they just do it. There is no repricing at that point and never has been in the 20 years I've been flying AA.
Do you actually cancel? It's auto canceled anyway when you don't board. I don't believe it's helpful to the airline to cancel, except that they know you're not flying a few minutes earlier, for whatever difference that makes.
It would be interesting to have a gate employee weigh in on this.
